Sorry not to be there today, as waylaid in the Ionian.
I'm sure it will be fun.
As a contribution to the potluck, some snaps attached from a drive around the island this morning...
Oh god, the Venetian bell-towers of Zante... A Self-style project beckons...
Cheers to all
Alan
We are people who attended Lord Byng High School's SELF program, an alternative satellite program for students in grades 9 or 10 to 12 who were highly self-motivated to learn, and to plan and create their own education, comprising English, Social Studies, and Physical Education. The program was active in the 1970s and produced a remarkable cohort of creative people.

SELF COMMEMORATIVE POEM GAME
Hi everyone. Did you get the SELF COMMEMORATIVE POEM GAME email?
It starts with these words:
"What are the first three words that come to your mind when you think of Self? Please write them down and then send them to me, Janis Harper, via email."
If you didn't get it, check your junk or trash. Make sure you're on the email list: http://eepurl.com/bfMVY9
In Janis' PS, she writes:
"PS If you want to write more than three words or three short phrases, please go to the blog at lordbyngselfprogram.blogspot.com and add your writing to this post: “Reflections - add yours in the comments.” No need to send longer writing to me. If you do, I’ll just select some bits from it to use. Thanks!"
That post is two or three posts below this one.
Looking forward to our summer event(s)!

July 22 is the date!
As you can see from the poll results on the right column, July 22 is the overwhelmingly-supported date for the reunion (82% of respondents). An email blast has gone out to everyone whose email address we have with some details and an invitation to volunteer. If you aren't on the list, please sign up here:
http://eepurl.com/bfMVY9
We won't publish details about the event here on the blog since it's a public space and we want to keep our party in the family, right? So you have to be on the mailing list to learn about the details.
See you all July 22!
IF YOU CAN'T MAKE IT…
I should mention here that if you can't come on that date, do send a message along letting us know when you might be in town over the summer – preferably close to July 22 – so we might be able to organize a second (smaller) event.

Introducing Bob Lawrence
Admin has moved this post out from comments into the main section so everyone finds it.

Hi John and Selfers,
I was in Self from Grade 9 (it started in Grade 9 then, 1971/72, the first year) through Grade 12 (Class of 1975).
I'm a geologist (UBC '79) living in Perth Australia, married since 1986 and have 3 adult boys. My recollections of Self are generally positive. However I would encourage mixed views and not just the facebook-like "life is/was perfect" views. I do think we had something very special and were basically allowed to study what we wanted (at least that was the impression we were given by teachers (Daryl Parker, Rolf Ahrens, Mrs Haremea sp?). Those teachers are exceptional and we were very lucky to have them. I would definitely like to connect with them, if they are willing.
I'm not sure, but I may have taken the photo of the dancing Selfers, since Bill Henderson, Arnold (Mark Armour), DO Griffo (David Griffiths) and George Richards (??), who also carried cameras, are in the picture. I have a copy of the Self journal circa 1974 I may be able to dig up. This may not be flattering to all. My wife Karen looks at pictures of me from those days (especially Joe Weider at the pool) and ..., well, I'm glad she saw them well after we were married.
If I can travel from Perth, I'd be happy to attend a reunion. I've had all the stuff about the 40th Lord Byng reunion but really don't remember many people on the list, and will unlikely go. I do, however, remember ALL of the Self people in that picture, with great nostalgia and fondness. I have managed to stay in touch with or connect to a few former selfers (some mentioned above) and would like to round-out the contacts.
Thanks for making this effort,
Cheers, Bob

Krud! Can't believe it's you Joe Weider ("the lesser"). Fond memories of playing blackjack at lunchtime, and all kinds of other strange fun! You and I are just about as far from Vancouver as each other - I live in Wales (UK since 1989) and am a professor at Cardiff University teaching journalism and media studies. I have a conference in Montreal just before the reunion, so I should be able to zip across to Vancouver for the occasion. Hope to see you there! cheers, Cindy

Re-introducing Ruth Murdoch
Hi everyone!
Oh this is so cool! Like others are expressing, I have a much stronger identity with this bunch than with my graduating class at Byng. I did go to my 35th reunion and it was really fun. But I am over the moon about this SELFreunion. I was in SELF in Grades 10 & 11 (1974 to 1976). Many fond memories.
Now to catch you up on the past 40 years, give or take. I graduated from UBC with a BA in anthropology/archaeology in 1984 and was hired as a researcher by Moricetown Band (in the Bulkley Valley near Smithers) that summer. After living in the Smithers area that summer, I decided to move here, and did so in January, 1985. A few months later, I rented a log cabin on the beautiful Telkwa High Road (the original telegraph line and first road through the valley) and enjoyed rural living for the next 27 years! Since 2012, when I sold my acreage, I have been enjoying "town life" in Smithers.
In the late 90s, I went back to school and became an art therapist, opening a private practice here in Smithers in 1999. Then in 2008 I went back to school again, this time the University of Calgary for a Masters of Counselling. I've now been in practice for 15 years, and still loving my career.
I never married (although I was in a long term common law relationship)..Nor did I have kids. I am surrounded by a wonderful community of friends. I own a beautiful home and periodically rent a room out to medical and nursing students, residents, and locums. I enjoy the vibrant arts community here. Gardening and fibre arts are ongoing passions. It's a good life!
I'm so enjoying this virtual reconnection that is happening and looking forward to the reunion too.
See you in the summer!
Ruth

Introducing John Oliver
Hi everyone. If you are reading this blog and you are a SELFer, then you've come to the right place!
Since the program ran at Byng for a decade, many of you will not know me, so I'll just quickly introduce myself as a SELFer from January 1975 to June 1976 (the year they decided to stop allowing grade 12s in SELF if I recall correctly). SELF had a big influence on my way in the world, and so I've been keen to help organize a reunion. Several folks on Facebook have been getting this idea going. Dave Haddock got together much of the mailing list from which you likely got the link to this blog. Others have been contacting old friends and spreading the word. So I've contributed setting up this blog and the web site at http://www.lordbyngselfprogram.net.
Now it's time for everyone to jump in and help organize an event or two. See the next blog posts for the beginnings of that discussion.

Why are we here?
Yes, the fundamental question has been asked…
The answer on this page is mundane…
We're here on blogspot so that everyone can find us. Brief history: a dozen or more SELFers on facebook started a group, started yaking, reminiscing, joking…and the conversation turned to having a reunion. Then we realized that we wanted to get in touch with everyone, regardless of where they are, and so now anyone can reach us by going to the main web page - http://lordbyngselfreunion.net - where there is a link though to this blog where the conversation continues!
